According to the AJC, there has been an epidemic of abuse and mistreatment in personal care homes throughout the Atlanta area recently. Residents of these homes are being treated poorly by the staff members who are trusted to take good care of them. It’s tragic when stories like this occur, whether in personal care homes, assisted living homes or nursing homes.

Co-founder of Atlanta’s Pope & Howard, P.C. scheduled to discuss nursing home legal cases

ATLANTA, GA (January 12, 2012) — Trial lawyer Marc Howard, co-founder of Atlanta law firm Pope & Howard, P.C., will speak at the North Carolina Advocates for Justice’s seminar entitled, “New Pitfalls in Nursing Home Litigation and How to Overcome Them.” The seminar is scheduled to take place on January 27, 2012, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Howard will discuss how attorneys can effectively manage nursing home cases in light of legislative limits on malpractice personal injury cases. The North Carolina Advocates for Justice invited Howard to speak at the seminar due to his extensive experience in nursing home cases and his work with the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association in the legislative battles against tort “reform.” Howard has long been committed to fighting for the causes of nursing home residents who are the victims of neglect or abuse at the hands of those charged with their care.

“I’m very honored by the invitation to speak at this important seminar,” Howard said. “I think it’s vital for leaders in our field to continue to participate in open exchanges of current topics so we can provide our clients with the most effective representation.”

Nursing home litigation, however, is just one of Howard’s legal specialties. He also leads cases concerning aviation injuries, construction site accidents, product defects, personal injury and wrongful death, trucking accidents and premises liability.

Howard, named as a Georgia Super Lawyer and as a “Legal Elite” lawyer in Georgia Trend Magazine, received his Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia’s School of Law in 1993. He partnered with Geoff Pope in 2005 and started the Pope & Howard, P.C., law firm in Atlanta. In 2010, Howard was appointed to serve as a member of the State Bar Board of Governors. Of the approximately 43,000 lawyers in Georgia, only 150 serve on the Board of Governors. His full professional bio is available online at http://popehoward.com/howard.php.

The Department of Public Welfare recently revoked the operating license for the Quadrangle Assisted Living Community in Haverford, Pennsylvania

The revocation of the nursing home license is the result of abuse caught on video by the family of a 78-year-old female dementia patient. The family made previous complaints to the nursing home management, but received no response. A hidden camera was then set up in the 78-year-old’s room by her family. The camera captured nursing home employees violently shaking, unnecessarily stripping, kicking and punching the elderly woman.
