Due to a potential contamination, Vita Food Products is recalling 8,088 packages of its Vita Classic Premium Sliced Smoked Atlantic Nova Salmon.

Although the company has yet to receive complaints or recorded illnesses, the smoked salmon product could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause fatal infections to people with weakened immune systems, including: expecting mothers, children and the elderly.

Local grocery stores that received the salmon include Publix in the state of Georgia. However, the product has been distributed throughout the United States.

Ford Motor Co. recently announced they are conducting a recall of 1.1 million pickup trucks.  The recall is due to unstable straps that are supposed to secure gas tanks.  The defective straps have led to eight fires.  Sadly, one individual experienced first and second degree burns as a result of the faulty part on a Ford pickup truck.

Individuals currently driving a Ford pickup truck, which may have defective straps, are encouraged to contact their local dealerships to remedy the situation.

The Associated Press reported on May 19, 2010, that Walmart has pulled its Miley Cyrus line of children’s jewelry and accessories.

Walmart Faces the Consumer Product Safety Commission

The decision to pull the popular jewelry line featuring celebrity Miley Cyrus came following reports from the Associated Press that Walmart had been continuing to sell the items despite knowing months ago that the jewelry was contaminated with high levels of the toxic heavy metal cadmium.

Cadmium poisoning can result in symptoms that include:

    • Intense Headaches
    • Vomiting
    • Anemia
    • Emphysema
    • Fatigue
    • Disruption in Sense of Small
    • Lowered Kidney Function
    • Reduced Bone Mineral Density

Reports indicate Walmart knew of the contamination as far back as February, when they received test results showing the products were toxic. Despite the information, Walmart continued to sell the make-it-yourself charm bracelets to consumers nationwide.

After the Consumer Product Safety Commission wanted Walmart to test their products, a spokeswoman for Walmart told a Consumer Product Safety Commission hearing that testing such items would be ‘too difficult.’

How You Can Get Help with Product Liability Issue in Georgia

Consumers dealing with these product liability issues think that Walmart should take responsibility not only to the consumers who purchased their toxic products, but to the workers who made them.

The CPSC is taking this very seriously after many complaints from consumers who want to see justice.

Product liability and the risks from contaminated products are not entirely new to Product Liability lawyers in Atlanta. There have been several cases before where large retailers have had to recall products because of contamination.

McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, is recalling certain over-the-counter (OTC) Children’s and Infants’ products distributed in the United States, Canada, Dominican Republic, Dubai (UAE), Fiji, Guam, Guatemala, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, and Kuwait.

The recall follows a finding by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that certain Johnson & Johnson medications were contaminated with bacteria and may not meet quality standards. Some of the products included in the recall may contain a higher amount of active ingredient than is safe.

Consumers can contact Johnson & Johnson about the recall at 1-888-222-6036 and at www.mcneilproductrecall.com .  A list of the recalled drugs can be found on-line at http://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls/ucm210443.htm .

Drug manufacturers such as Johnson & Johnson are required to meet safety criteria when manufacturing and distributing both OTC and prescription drugs.  Drug defects can result in serious injury and even death to consumers, and drug makers are responsible for negligence in the manufacturing, distribution and labeling of such prescription and OTC medications.

Pope & Howard, P.C. is experienced in handling complex cases involving serious injury and death resulting from drug product defects.  Our goal is to conduct a thorough investigation of the entire process of drug manufacturing and marketing to ensure that consumers have been provided safe products and enough information to make good medical decisions for themselves and their families.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled all Simplicity full-size cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames.

According to the CPSC, the crib has a product defect that can cause the mattress to collapse and entrap, suffocate or strangle children in the crib.  The recall includes both fixed-side and drop-side cribs. The CPSC has learned of one infant death associated with the product defect on the crib.

According to a CPSC press release, “CPSC is aware of 13 additional incidents involving the recalled cribs collapsing due to the metal mattress- support frame bending or detaching, including one child entrapment that did not result in injury, and one child who suffered minor cuts to his head when his mattress collapsed and he fell out of the crib.”

CPSC said crib owners should immediately stop using the cribs and find a different, safe sleeping arrangement for children.

The recalled cribs were sold at Wal-Mart, Target, Babies R Us and other stores.  According to the CPSC press release, “Consumers should contact the store where the crib was purchased to receive a refund, replacement crib or store credit.”

Product defect lawyers like Pope and Howard, P.C. know the importance of monitoring agency recalls from the CPSC in order to follow the latest expert findings on defective products and negligent product design.
